we’re going to let you sail and sail. you send us a postcard if you ever get there.
“up in the air” was sort of a movie about that song nowhere man by the beatles. it was as quirky/funny as it was existential, and despite taking place mostly in airports and dying office spaces, i thought a great deal of it was beautifully shot. i liked it so much more than i thought i would.

drunken tiger - monster

it’s the year of the tiger. if you were born in 1986, it’s your spirit animal. i read on a menu in a restaurant that people who are tigers are cousins to oxes. they often wear dark suits. they fear hyundais and they only eat blue moon ice cream. these things are usually right.

the balance of things.

the last few days i feel like i’ve been cut up with meat scissors and roasted slowly on the galbi. my head teacher (bu jeong nim), because of whatever napoleon complex she’s currently afflicted with, has been making up these bogus rules during the last few days she has to torture me. two days ago, she grabbed one of those cute benie/berets all of us twenty something teachers are wearing from my very head and banned me from wearing it. today, it’s headphones. it’s straight up crazy and maybe a wee bit racist since the rules seem to only apply to me. (i’m a relatively docile girl who tries to do what i’m told. the vice principal called me PURE today. PURE!)

exhaustion has set in, too. the korean teachers have been preparing for their kickin vacations while i’ve been preparing four weeks of “winter camp” by my lonesome. i haven’t slept in about two days or so and i just handed in an amazon acre of lesson plans. (promptly shoved in the dark abyss of the closet!) i’m not complaining  because all this is in our incredibly vague contract and now that the planning’s done, i’ll get to chill for the most part.  i’m just emoting. better here than out loud to myself on the street. which is definitely what i did after the beanie/beret incident.

and more importantly, i’m emoting because the universe is on my side.  at least for today.  three of my students told me they are entering study abroad programs at my suggestion and another boy just gave me homemade vegan cookies from his mother. i’m eating them right now. that kind of stuff makes me feel like a vibrating bomb of goodwill and gunpowder. (i can not get on airplanes right now! i will explode mother fucking happiness!)

and it’s new year’s eve. i have tomorrow off.  tonight, i’m going to meet my friends and sip whiskey while father time swallows up 2009 and this psycho minnie mouse woman like the tiny olives they are. can’t beat the universe guys.
